The difference between Equine Assisted Therapy and Equine Assisted Life Coaching

January 2011

It was many years ago when we first started to develop the Holistequine technique of interactive horse exercises for personal growth and at the time there were only a handful of people in America doing similar work. They called themselves Equine Facilitated Psychotherapists.........this original version involved a horse expert who would then work with their client and a psychotherapist.
Over the years many different variations and interpretations of “horse therapy” developed as the concept of working with horses in this manner became more widely practiced and accepted and there are now thousands of people doing similar work with horses mainly under the banner of Equine Assisted Therapy.

So you want to work with horses in Life Coaching ?

To be a Holistequine Equine Assisted Life Coach you will need to have a love of horses and a desire to help others. You will need an understanding of the principals of Oneness and the fact that everything we attract into our life is a mirror for us to learn what we need for our own spiritual growth. ..................And that anything less is “preaching” not teaching
E.A.L.C course is taught at two levels, it is both a philosophy and a practice. The philosophy and written material stimulate left brain activity which is then combined with the experience (of the interactive horse exercises)
The fundamental aim of the training is to have both left and right brain balanced as BOTH are essential to the “whole”. That is we learn how to balance our Emotional Intelligence with our IQ
The reason it is so important to be right brain proficient is that without an highly tuned intuitive right hemisphere we will not be able to tap into non verbal communication to get the pure reading (about our client) from our horse facilitator, in this case our left brain would dominate and the information would then come ONLY through our ego/lower self...................and we would not be acting AS A FACILITATOR for higher intelligence
In Equine Assisted Life Coaching our horse becomes the channel therefore (as we have said) practitioners we must change from being left brain dominant and use the exercises to go into the world of  our horse and learn to trust what our right brain is telling us. The information received can often go against all logic but we must trust and pass on to our client what we have “intuited”, the trick is to then translate this information into words and try to minimize filling in the gaps with our own “stuff’
Working with horses in the field of human personal development is totally different to human one on one life coaching; the main difference is that the horse becomes the medium between the client and the client’s Higher Self, a situation which can be difficult to adjust to.
Whereas working with a human life coach one on one is personal (i.e. calling upon our own “knowledge”), working with a horse becomes transpersonal (here we call on higher “knowledge”)
There is a saying that “we are what we know” meaning that often our understanding of things and experience needs to be acknowledged for us to feel validated as “who we are”.........this however is only our ego, it is our left brain wanting to find credibility, identity and recognition
Horses in equine assisted life coaching sessions work to assist clients purely by identifying ‘energy”; it is an instinctive right brain reaction to what they perceive in a person’s energy field and for us to be able to also do this we must be able to do the same. We must drop our preconceived ideas and also learn to “read” energy. This forms the basis of non verbal communication
We must be careful not to get stuck in our traditional ways of thinking and sometimes years of study can be a hindrance. For example I had studied many different alternative and natural philosophies and practices for about 15 years before my horses guided me into this work and the biggest thing that I had to realise was that everything I had learnt in a left brain capacity was information which only built up my experience life's potential I had to open my creative side.
Everything I knew was all about ME and my past learning and if I was to have any success in this new line of work I had to put everything I had learnt aside and not only develop my intuition but then also be able to trust it in order to match what my horse was showing me........................ to indentify through my own intuition what THE HORSE was telling me, through his instincts.

This can be hard because we have to then give our clients information about what they NEED not what they WANT. It is human nature to want to be liked so we often want to “soften the blow” and water down the information we pick up from our horse life coach, but always remember that when a client comes to you it is an agreement between everyone’s higher self.  At that “higher” level the client is ready to accept the truth even though they may not immediately thank you or be happy by what you have told them. In many cases the information will sit in their subconscious minds until it is ready to be absorbed by their higher self intelligence.
I recently had a client who rang me after a 4 year of no communication and the first thing she said was ...“I finally GOT IT” she had eventually understood the “messages”
Being able to let go of the left brain in E.A.L.C. is crucial. The ego usually wants results (read approval) but the higher self must sometimes just be happy with knowing it has passed on what the client REALLY needs. As these two aspects are coming together more and more the recognition of truth is becoming instantaneous
Our ego/left brain has invested so much time in gaining knowledge and experience it OFTEN DOES NOT WANT TO STEP OUT OF THE LIMELIGHT and share with its intuitive other side. In this case our ego can start to “make things up” using past references. This is when we become frauds so we must be constantly vigilant. The good thing is that we gradually learn the difference and can recognise where the information is coming from

We must leave our minds clear to receive any new information coming in even if it makes no sense to us at the time; it is information the client’s higher self needs to absorb and the more we can clear our own past, subconscious baggage the easier it becomes
The best analogy is to see the knowledge gained as information that we put in a book and store in our library until such time as our right brain calls for it. This way left and right brain (Alpha and Beta) work in unison AND most importantly no one feels threatened

Unlike humans horses are not emotional nor do they have a complex Beta left brain so they can keep things simple and react instantly because of it.
How horses strengthen our energy field
Everything emits a positive or negative influence (electric charge) called ions
During my years working with patients at a Chiropractic/Naturopathic clinic we would do certain tests with them to demonstrate how things around affected our energy field. As an example we did this by showing how the human energy field is weakened by fluorescent globes. We would do a Kinesiology test (using a patient’s arm muscle) as a base positive and then expose the patient to fluorescent lighting (negative energy) where we would immediately see the muscle go weak. Opposite to this I do believe the horse has a positive effect on our energy field in much the same way, it is just that we do not know why or how it works.....YET
It is a fact that external stimuli (energy) can influence us in ways we are just now beginning to understand and the science of epigenetics is exploring this phenomenon. This is the area that excites me personally and I know we have not even scraped the surface of the W.B.I.  Work’s potential................exciting times ahead.
Left brain science has held us back from grounding these concepts as they have been considered too ‘”airy fairy”, too right brain, but I believe that as we balance these two we will see acceptance and these metaphysical modalities will become more main stream

The Well-Being Manifesto

Sunday Mail, July 2005 (article not written by us)

Many Australians feel that the political system has let them down, and that governments are not responding to their real concerns. We seem to have lost sight of a vision for a better society and to have entrusted our future to wherever the market takes us.

This website presents a new manifesto, one that takes as its starting point the belief that governments in Australia should be devoted to improving our individual and social wellbeing.
